Notre Dame Cathedral Reopens After Five Years of Restoration

On December 7, 2024, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris officially reopened after completing restoration work, following a devastating fire on April 15, 2019.

The reopening ceremony was attended by domestic and international dignitaries, including President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. President Macron delivered a congratulatory speech in front of the cathedral, followed by a commemorative service led by Archbishop Laurent Ulrich of Paris. At 9 p.m., a celebratory concert was held in the cathedral's courtyard, allowing citizens to share in the joy of the restoration.

The first public Mass for general worshippers was held on the afternoon of December 8, with special themed services conducted daily during the reopening week from December 8 to 15.

Prior to the fire, Notre-Dame Cathedral attracted over 12 million visitors annually, making it a premier tourist destination in Paris. Post-reopening, it is expected to draw 14 to 15 million visitors per year. To manage visitor numbers, an online reservation system has been implemented.

The restoration project involved over 2,000 experts dedicated to faithfully restoring the cathedral's original form. Notably, the 96-meter-high spire and wooden roof, which collapsed during the fire, have been reconstructed to their former appearance.

The reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral holds significant meaning not only for Parisians but also for people worldwide, underscoring the importance of preserving and restoring cultural heritage.
